How To Use A Insulin Pen

Follow these steps when using an insulin Flexipen

1.Preparing your FlexPen

Wash your hands. Check the label to make sure that you are using the right type of insulin. This is especially important if you take more than one type of insulin

Pull off the pen cap. Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab

Remove the protective tab from the needle and screw it onto your FlexPen tightly. It is important that the needle is placed on straight

Never place a disposable needle on your FlexPen until you are ready to take your injection

Pull off the big outer needle cap and then pull off the inner needle cap. Throw away the inner needle cap right away

Always use a new needle for each injection

Be careful not to bend or damage the needle before use

To reduce the risk of needle stick, never put the inner needle cap back on the needle

2. Doing the airshot before each injection

Small amounts of air may collect in the cartridge during normal use. To avoid injecting air and ensure proper dosing:

Turn the dose selector to 2 units

Hold your FlexPen with the needle pointing up, and tap the cartridge gently a few times, which moves the air bubbles to the top

Press the push-button all the way in until the dose selector is back to 0. A drop of insulin should appear at the tip of the needle

If no drop appears, change the needle and repeat.

If you still do not see a drop of insulin after 6 tries, do not use the FlexPen.

3. Selecting your dose

The dose selector should be set at 0

Turn the dose selector to the number of units you need to inject. The pointer should line up with your dose

Note that the dose can be corrected either up or down by turning the dose selector in either direction until the correct dose lines up with the pointer, right up until you are ready to inject

Be careful not to press the push-button until you inject the needle, as insulin will come out

You cannot select a dose larger than the number of units left in the cartridge

4. Taking the injection

Be sure to take the injection exactly as your health care provider showed you. He or she may have specific instructions for how and where to inject.

Insert the needle into your skin

Press the push-button all the way in until the dose selector is back to 0. Turning the dose selector will not inject insulin

Keep the needle in the skin for at least 6 seconds, and keep the push-button pressed until the needle has been pulled out from the skin

You may see a drop of insulin at the needle tip. This is normal and has no effect on the dose you just received

If blood appears, press the injection site lightly with a finger. Do not rub the area.

5. After the injection

Do not recap the needle. Recapping can lead to a needle-stick injury

Remove the needle from the FlexPen after each injection to prevent infection, insulin leakage, and to ensure proper dosing

Place the used needle and any empty FlexPen in a sharps container or some type of hard plastic or metal container with a screw top. Check with your health care provider about the right way to throw away the used syringes and needles

Put the pen cap back on the FlexPen and store it at room temperature without the needle attached.

Do not share your NovoLog, FlexPen, PenFill cartridge, or PenFill cartridge compatible insulin delivery device or reuse or share your needles with other people. You may give other people a serious infection, or get a serious infection from them.

Always use a new needle for each injection

As a precautionary measure, always carry a spare insulin delivery device in case your FlexPen is lost or damaged

Remember to keep disposable FlexPen with you. Do not leave it in a car or other place where it can get too hot or too cold .
